It was 4 friends who went to watch a movie M a fine night after driving for an hour or so. The reviews had been so overwhelming that there was no doubt about which movie to go that weekend. After over 100 min of nonsensical drama, the closing credits came up. None of us was sure what we had just seen. "Is that it?" was the unspoken expression on everyone's face. As we came out in the cold, running towards the car, we were just wondering how the hell can they make such a movie. And well, there does appear something terribly wrong with our tastes because Academy Awards jury has just nominated M for 7 Oscars. M is nothing else but Michael Clayton. A seemingly sore version of 'Constant Gardner' and awash with illogical proceedings, the movie is the most 'overrated' drama in the history of films.
After seeing this, 80% of my oscar thrill has already been dampened. Then there are few other surprises that the Academy springs up. These are not as disheartening but just unexpected. Just 2 and 1 nomination for American Gangster and Charlie Wilson's War respectively. Juno's lead lady nomination also seems a bit too much, no doubt she acted well but was it that good? I am very happy for Depp's nomination but again if you ask me frankly, probably there were better options. Atonement's supporting actress nomination raised my eyebrows too, I thought her role was quite too small to make an impact of that level. Most of the other actor/actresses nominations are new to me, so I do not know. But it is offending and disturbing to see Clayton being in best movie, best direction and best supporting actress categories.
Overall, I think year failed to produce any big movies like we had Departed last time. I am yet to see 'No country for old men' and 'There will be blood', I hope they deserve the no. of nominations they have got.
