Destiny and desires don't think alike. It might not be as dramatic and unexpected as O Henry's stories but often circumstances surprise us in more than trivial ways. The seed of our thought might not reach the fruition but that doesn't mean the end of the world.
"In this eventful journey called 'life', be ready to face the boredom, monsters, hiccups, tears, losses and a fresh start". Defeat is just a psychological term, the person who keeps trying doesn't know what a defeat means coz it was never about winning anyways. Often, it is all about making a choice; taking a decision. But often the fear of starting a thing from scratch is so overwhelming that we keep brooding over what we can't get or what we've already lost. But is it ever too late to start? I know reality is not as promising as Karol's fortune (in 'White', the tricolor trilogy, Krzysztof Kieslowski), but 90% is about your attitude. If you have the right attitude then nothing is a defeat for you. Life is too precious to be taken for granted and too short to brood over a loss. I might not get what I wanted but the will to start again is mine and that is not dictated by any damn destiny.
If everyone gave up on failures, we wouldn't have had -
Abe Lincoln - He entered the Blackhawk War as a captain. By the end of the war, he had been demoted to the rank of private.
Failed in Business at age 21.
Defeated in a Legislative race at age 22.
Failed again in business at age 24.
Overcame the death of his sweetheart at age 26.
Had a nervous breakdown at age 27.
Lost a congressional race at age 34.
Lost a congressional race at age 36.
Lost a senatorial race at age 45.
Failed in an effort to become vice-president at age 47.
Lost a senatorial race at age 49.
Was elected President of the United States at age 52.
Thomas Edison - When he first attended school his teachers complained he was "too slow" and hard to handle. He tried over 2,000 experiments before he got the light bulb to work.
Einstein - He failed the entrance exam to a university a number of times-
-and made his great discoveries while working by day in a low level clerical job. Many today say that he was dyslexic.
