Today itself, I was talking to Zhon-Ning (hope I got that right Rufus) and we were reflecting upon the fact that past year n particularly the last sem has been very good for us in terms of knowing and interacting with colleagues in our research group. And though, that is not the sole factor of my writing this blog, it did make me more enthusiastic about it.
Also, it might be a bit due to my getting nostalgic about the fact that I have just 3 months more at U of I. So, I do want to write about everyone in our research group (hopefully wud do justice to my acquaintances)
Lets begin with Zhong-Ning himself, he is a chilled out intelligent dude. I fell all the more close to him because my initial research project which dint turn out much success (;p) was related to what he was doing. He gave me lot of insights for it and cheered me up whenever I faced problems. And, he had conquered Qualcomm, so I guess he does deserve special mention :d. Another thing to mention about him is his knowledge of 'good' movies. I have brought two movies recommended by him today itself - Blue & White. So, as soon as I finish this blog, I shall get my pop-corns ready! I shall give the feedback soon on these :)
Then, we have Anthony Halley. He is my batchmate and we would be graduating soon this summer. He has been a very amiable and helpful guy. He is fun to be around with and I enjoy his misery at linux at times! :-)) (I stil remember the slackware frustration). And, how can I forget to mention that he is the most important guy in the lab because he has provided us with the most needed thing for engineers cum researchers cum coffee addicts like me - the coffee machine. He basically has the credit to make me start drinking a very bitter, mildly sweet, almost black coffee. We have good coffee-times now in our labs.
Now comes Helen, I shall introduce her as the catalyst that actually brought our group people closer or in Zhong-Ning's words, 'acted as a lubricant'. She is originally a student from Bristol and is here with us till just Mar :( She is really a great colleague and always maintains good interaction with everybody. I like talking to her because she can talk about a variety of things. In fact, she, ZN, Anthony and me form the coffee group of our lab...it's a lot of fun!
There is Simone, he's an exchange student from Italy and is again a very friendly guy. I dont know him that much but I guess he's quite a fun-loving person. He's apparently the only one who is excited about all the snowstorms and cold! And hey, thanks for lending me the movies :) I wonder if he like Za's pizza..hmmmmmm...
Vartika is the senior most person in the lab right now. To put it plainly, she is the most intelligent girl I've ever met. In fact, there would be rarely 3-4 guys whom I would consider intellectualy stronger than her. Her analytical, mathematical and theoritical skills just amaze me. She's so cool and helpful. She usually has an answer for everything and I am just so glad to have been working with her. She is a serious and sincere kind of a person. I dont know if she's finally going to academia but if she does, she will surely be one of the finest faculty. I think she likes hindi poetry and theater. She also has a good choice in movies. Overall, she has a good knowledge of most of the tech and non-tech things and is a very interesting person to talk to.
Vijay is the new PhD student and has arrived last Fall. He's also a friendly, slightly shy and a nice guy. He does get troubled with courses at times :), but I think by now he has understood that grades really dont matter. He's the only non-linux user in the group and we do pester him for 'his Vista' a lot :p. Another junior is Paul who's finishing his BS this sem. He's a cool, sincere guy. I had a good experience with him working on the wireless testbed. I wish him good luck for his grad applications. There's also Thomas but I dont know him that well because he usually works in later hours in lab. But whatever little I know him, he's been a pleasure to meet. A new person in the group is Rishi. Again, little time has elapsed with him, so can't write much but he's been a helpful person in the testbed project. He's smart and helpful. Also, he is one of the 'coffee fraternity'.
Overall, I think we all form a cool and fun group together! It's been extremely nice for me to be with them. I wish good luck to everyone in their future endeavors. I hope we'll be in touch.
